Kinematics of Runners with and without Patellofemoral Pain during Prolonged Treadmill Running

چکیده
INTRODUCTION It has been suggested that abnormal lower extremity kinematics during running are related to patellofemoral pain (PFP). Specifically, during the first half of stance when the knee is loaded, excessive internal rotation of the femur may result in lateral patellae maltracking [1,2]. Similarly, the patellofemoral joint may also be influenced by excessive knee valgus, which may be partly due to increased femoral adduction [1]. Also, it has been reported that PFP is associated with weak hip abductors and external rotators [3]. Therefore, these abnormal femoral motions may become more exaggerated in an exerted state, such as at the end of a prolonged run. Conversely, PFP has also been associated with decreased knee flexion during functional activities, which is thought to reduce the loads on the patellofemoral joint [1]. Further, the coupling that occurs between the knee and the foot may result in a decrease in rearfoot eversion as well [2].

Rear-foot kinematics in runners with PFPS during walking, squatting and uphill running
Background Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is the most common overuse injury in distance runners. A pilot investigation found that runners with a history of PFPS exhibited increased rear-foot eversion and reduced rear-foot dorsiflexion compared to uninjured controls during level treadmill running [1]. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether these kinematic alterations were a...
متن کاملCoupling angle variability in healthy and patellofemoral pain runners.
BACKGROUND Patellofemoral pain is hypothesized to result in less joint coordination variability. The ability to relate coordination variability to patellofemoral pain pathology could have many clinical uses; however, evidence to support its clinical application is lacking. The aim was to determine if vector coding's coupling angle variability, as a measure of joint coordination variability, was...
متن کاملComparisons of bracing and patellar taping on knee three-dimensional kinematics of women with patellofemoral pain syndrome in stance phase of running
Introduction: Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is one of the most common knee injuries that accounted for between 25-40% of all knee problems presenting to sports medicine centers. Two treatment methods of bracing and taping are recommended in these patients that their effectiveness are unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the two treatment methods on knee three-dim...
متن کاملVaried response to mirror gait retraining of gluteus medius control, hip kinematics, pain, and function in 2 female runners with patellofemoral pain.
STUDY DESIGN Case report. BACKGROUND The underlying mechanism of the changes in running mechanics after gait retraining is presently unknown. This case report assesses changes in muscle coordination and kinematics during treadmill running and step ascent in 2 female runners with patellofemoral pain after mirror gait retraining. CASE DESCRIPTION Two female runners with chronic patellofemoral...
متن کاملEffectiveness of gait-retraining with auditory feedback on pain and lower body kinematics in injured recreational runners
Aims and background: Abnormal hip and knee mechanics are often implicated in runners with history of injury. We considered evaluating a simple gait-retraining protocol, using auditory-external feedback, in runners with running-related injuries and abnormal hip and knee mechanics. The effect of using external-feedback may have been more profound if the content of instruction had been relevant to...
